Dear Students,
I’m happy to have you in my class. I know finding out that you are coming to Daniel McKee Alternative School was most likely not your proudest moment, but I hope you find that being here gives you a chance to evaluate your choices, and adjust as we all must do from time to time. In addition, many students find that being here with smaller class sizes and less distractions gives them an opportunity to catch up on skills that they have missed in the past.
A little about me: I’ve been married 16 years and have 5 children. Their ages range from high school to 2 years old. I graduated from MTSU with a Bachelor of Science in Political Science and went back to MTSU for my teaching certification several years later. I’ve taught 6th, 7th, & 8th grade ELA, and 6th grade Social Studies. High School classes that I have taught include Public Speaking, Strategic Reading, and High School Reading Intervention.
Students often ask me why I choose to teach “the bad kids” at Daniel McKee. My answer is that my students are not “bad kids”. They’re just kids. Sometimes, they have made bad choices. DMK is a second chance. Often students come to our school at crossroads in their life. I work here because I want to be one of the people, along with my fellow teachers and others that love you, standing at that crossroads helping you find your way.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Elam
